The best camera in the world would not capture a perfect picture without great lighting. When filming, lighting is needed to create depth, amplify images and boost a story’s atmosphere and mood. The importance of lighting in filmmaking cannot be over-emphasized.
In this article, we’ll be looking at some types of lights used in filmmaking. Let’s delve in, shall we?
HMI is acronym for Hydrargyrum medium-arc iodide. Quite a mouthful, right? This type of light is a metal-halide gas discharge medium arc-length lamp which contains mercury vapour mixed with metal halides. HMI lights are capable of between 85 to 108 lumens per watt, about four times that of conventional incandescent lamps. HMI bulbs are designed to emit a 6000k colour temperature light, which comes close to matching natural sunlight. Due to their very high frequency operation, they produce flicker-free light.
These are simple lights that consist of the housing and a reflector for the bulb. Due to the fact that they use no diffusion to control light spread and have no focus beam, their beam spread is less controllable and their output, more intense. However, a barndoor can be attached to it to help control the beam.
This type of lights is usually used to illuminate interiors as they can be likened to the incandescent filament bulbs which were commonly used in homes and offices until recently. Though extremely hot and requires high power, they outlive conventional incandescent lights. Tungsten lighting fixtures are dimmable and can be open-faced or Fresnel up to about 20KW.
A Fresnel lens is a special type of lens that is divided into concentric circles which evens out the light and allows for the beam to be varied from flood to spot by changing the distance between the reflector unit and the lens.
Fluorescent lamps are more efficient than incandescent lamps and are capable of generating up to 100 lumens per watt. The colour temperature of fluorescent lamps can vary from 2700K to 6500K depending on the phosphor combination. While flicker can be a problem for domestic fluorescent installations, fluorescent designed for filming have electronic ballasts which prevents flickers.
LED, which stands for light-emitting diode are monochromatic, which means they emit only a single wavelength of light. They are cool because they can easily be battery-powered, which makes them portable and require no heavy cabling. LEDs are eco-friendly and highly efficient.
